Project Planning and Control

Project Planning and Control

The concept of the “triple constraints” is one of the keystones of project management. The triple constraints are scope (quality), time and cost. Projects are about delivering a product or a service within defined quality criteria, on time and within budget. In this course, you will gain solid skills in planning, monitoring and controlling the scope, time and cost constraints throughout the project phases.

Meeting quality criteria, on time delivery and cost targets are challenges for all projects. You will learn how to establish a solid and robust project plan, including scope planning using the WBS (work breakdown structure), scheduling using network and Gantt techniques, and cost estimating and budgeting using proven estimating methods. You will learn how to define the work and calculate a realistic critical path. You will establish a cost estimate by allocating resources to tasks, aggregating project costs and making allowances for risk. You will learn how to monitor and control progress in the execution phase, as well as how to manage changes and deviations to avoid scope creep and margin leakage. By using Earned Value analysis, you will be able to report on project status and forecast future performance. In this course, you will learn in detail how to complete the task on time and within budget to meet or exceed stakeholder expectations.

Learning objectives

  • Understanding the concept of planning, monitoring and controlling projects; scope, time and cost
  • Create project management strategies at start-up
  • Create a realistic and robust project plan
  • Create a WBS, a schedule with a critical path and a cost estimate using sound assumptions and constraints
  • Monitor and control project progress – manage changes and deviations
  • Establishing project status and calculating forecasts based on the Earned Value technique
  • Use best practice examples to significantly improve project outcomes.

Target audience

This course is aimed at anyone involved in planning and executing projects

Flexible study options

The course is 100% online. When you enrol, you get access to a unique learning platform with an intuitive user-interface. The amount of time required to complete the course will vary depending on your existing project knowledge and experience. Allow at least 15-20 hours to complete the course.

Metier OEC programmes and Executive MBA at SKEMA Business School

The course can form part of the Diploma in Project Management and the Advanced Certificate in Project Management, which in turn can become part of the Executive MBA in Project Management delivered by SKEMA Business School and Metier. If you take this course as part of a programme including exams and university credits, you will spend more time as you need to review recommended literature and prepare for the exam. The course is worth 5 ECTS as part of an academic degree.
